A revista Empire lançou uma pesquisa a fim de descobrir quais seriam os 500 melhores filmes de todos os tempos, não apenas na opinião de seus leitores, mas também de críticos conceituados da área.

A pesquisa foi chamada de “a mais ambiciosa pesquisa sobre filmes jamais feita” pela própria Empire e contou com os votos de 100.000 leitores da revista, 1500 profissionais de Hollywood e 500 críticos de cinema.
